Citation Intro

Since the delivery of the first Citation in 1972, the Citation brand has set the standard in the business jet market, prized for combining reliability, efficiency, and comfort with advanced technology and class-leading performance.

Keeping a Citation flying depends on a handful of interconnected systems: landing gear, wheel & brake, fuel, electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, and pneumatic. Each has its own parts, wear points, and maintenance intervals.

At Aircraft Accessories International (AAI), we work on Citation aircraft components every day as an FAA and EASA Part 145 repair station. This guide walks through the Citation models AAI supports and what owners, mechanics, and fleet operators should know about maintaining each of the aircraft's core systems.

Citation Landing Gear Services

Citation Landing Gear Inspections

While the Citation maintenance manual covers minor corrosion repair and blending, AAI has found that corrosion on Citation main landing gear is typically beyond those repairable limits. AAI has developed numerous FAA-approved repair specifications that machine out corrosion and restore the landing gear to factory dimensions, including chrome plating and HVOF repairs on the axle, oversized bushing repairs on attach bores, chrome and nickel-plating repairs on the brake adapter, and cold spray and epoxy repairs on the oleo barrel and piston.

Nose landing gear on Citation aircraft can also develop a shimmy, caused by wheel imbalance, uneven tire wear, loose torque link joints, loose nose strut attaching bolts, worn wheel bearings, a defective shimmy damper, or a shimmy damper low on fluid. The nose wheel shimmy damper itself is a hydraulic unit that absorbs and dampens shimmy during takeoff, landing, and taxiing.

Citation Landing Gear Corrosion

AAI has identified major corrosion areas across a wide range of Citation models, including the 510, 525, 525A, 525B, 525C, 550, 560, 560XL, 650, 680 Sovereign, 680A Latitude, 700 Longitude, and 750 X.

On the main landing gear (MLG) trailing link, common corrosion areas include the axle, axle attach bores, oleo attach bores, trunnion attach bores, and brake adapter outer diameter. On the MLG oleo, corrosion shows up in the barrel and internal bores, the piston and its internal bores, and external surfaces.

Corrosion left untreated can make an aircraft unairworthy in just a few years.

Citation Landing Gear Repair Services

AAI's corrosion repairs can save operators up to 75% compared to the cost of a factory-new replacement. AAI also offers full overhaul, repair, and testing on shimmy dampers, including DER bore repair approvals to address housing scoring and corrosion, and stocks shimmy damper parts including 5543001-3, 5543001-11, 5543001-12, 6343001-9, and 6343001-10.

Citation Wheel and Brake Parts and Services

Brake assemblies and wheel assemblies are both parts AAI overhauls and exchanges for Citation aircraft. On the main landing gear trailing link, the brake adapter is a known corrosion area, and AAI has developed chrome and nickel-plating repairs specifically to restore its outer diameter to factory dimensions.

Citation Hydraulic Parts

Most Cessna aircraft, including Citation, use hydraulic actuators for retractable landing gear rather than the electromechanical systems found on some Beechcraft models.

A hydraulic landing gear actuator typically consists of a piston, piston rod, cylinder, seals, and internal locking devices, working alongside pumps and braces.

The nose wheel shimmy damper is also a hydraulic unit, and AAI's MLG oleo corrosion repairs (cold spray and epoxy repairs to the barrel and piston) directly serve this hydraulic system.

Recommended preventative maintenance for hydraulic landing gear actuators:

• Wipe piston rods after each flight to remove moisture and debris

• Follow the lubrication schedule outlined in the maintenance manual

• Check for damage, cracks, and corrosion on a regular basis

• Inspect for oil leaks and service with oil regularly

• Inspect connecting joints and bolts for looseness

Citation Mechanical Parts

Citation aircraft use an unusually wide range of flight control actuators, including aileron, elevator, and rudder trim tab actuators, rudder bias actuators, flap actuators and motors, speed brake actuators, thrust attenuator actuators, and uplock actuators.

With proper maintenance, landing gear actuators and similar mechanical components can often last the lifespan of the aircraft, though seals, bearings, and gears may need periodic replacement or refurbishment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Citation models does AAI support overall?

A wide range from the original Citation I (500/501) through the Citation X (750) and Mustang (510), including the CJ family (525/525A/525B/525C) and Ultra/Encore/XLS (560/560XL) models.

Which Citation models have AAI-developed corrosion repair specifications?

510, 525, 525A, 525B, 525C, 550, 560, 560XL, 650, 680 Sovereign, 680A Latitude, 700 Longitude, and 750 X.

How much can AAI's corrosion repairs save compared to a factory-new replacement?

Up to 75%, depending on the extent of the corrosion and the repair required.

What is a nose wheel shimmy damper and why would I need one?

It is a hydraulic unit that absorbs and dampens nose wheel shimmy during takeoff, landing, and taxiing, needed when wheel imbalance, uneven tire wear, or loose torque link joints cause the nose to vibrate.
